Founded by Sean Patrick, the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation provides ovarian cancer education and funding for ovarian cancer research, in part through its annual Colorado and Utah Climb for Life events. Learn more about ovarian cancer and HERA’s efforts toward finding a cure. Consider signing up to participate in one of the annual Climb for Life events to fundraise for ovarian cancer research.

The HERA Foundation and Ovarian Cancer Research

The HERA Foundation came into being in 2001, after its late founder, Sean Patrick, was recovering from her seventh surgery for ovarian cancer. Frustrated by the relatively little ovarian cancer information and research funding available, Patrick strove to change this situation. Since that time, the HERA Foundation has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to ovarian cancer research—much of it raised through the nonprofit’s flagship Climb for Life events, which started in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Ovarian Cancer Facts, Signs, and Symptoms

One of the HERA Foundation’s main aims is spreading information about ovarian cancer, including the signs and symptoms. Ovarian cancer is one of the most underdiagnosed cancers, though 1 in 57 women will be diagnosed this year. Caught in its early stages, it’s highly treatable, but most diagnoses aren’t made until late stages. Signs and symptoms include bloating, unusual fatigue, frequent urination, diarrhea, abnormal bleeding, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss or gain, among others.

Colorado and Salt Lake City HERA Climb for Life Events

In addition to a number of other fundraisers, the HERA Foundation runs two annual events, the Colorado and Utah Climb for Life events. The Colorado Climb for Life takes place in June in Boulder, while the Salt Lake City Climb for Life takes place in September. Both events feature one or two days of climbing outdoors (beginners are welcome) with professional rock climbers who volunteer their time, as well as meals and entertainment.

Participants simply register online, filling out a form that indicates their level of climbing, among other information. They then collect pledges for the number of feet they aim to climb during the Climb for Life event. During the event, they attempt to reach their climbing goals, with the help of the professional climbers and climbing volunteers who set up the ropes for them and belay.

Rock Climbing Events for a Cause: The HERA Foundation

Dedicated to preventing the future losses of wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, and girlfriends to ovarian cancer, the HERA Foundation donates roughly 85 percent of funds raised directly to ovarian cancer research and respite efforts. The HERA Women's Cancer Foundation strives to educate people about ovarian cancer while searching for a cure. By participating in the Colorado or Utah HERA Climb for Life events, anyone can be a fundraiser for ovarian cancer research.
